| Canon City | Museum Of Colorado Prisons | This museum is housed in the old Women's Correctional Facility that was constructed in 1935. The museum contains quite a few goodies including the hangman's noose used for the last execution by hanging in Colorado, the gas chamber, and some items related to cannibal Alferd Packer. Fun, fun, fun! (Thanks to The Quiet One for the suggestion.) |
| Estes Park | The Stanley Hotel | This is famous as the hotel that inspired Stephen King's The Shining, when he was staying in suite 217, and it's also supposedly haunted. Oh, and don't miss the ghost tour which takes around the most haunted and/or fascinating parts of the hotel, including the underground tunnel. Fun! |
| Lake City | Alferd Packer Massacre Site |
Visit the infamous location where America's Fine Young Cannibal, Alferd Packer, did some human meat packing back in 1874. (Thanks to The Quiet One for the suggestion.) |
| Hinsdale County Museum |
Per Roadside America: "In downtown Lake City stands the Hinsdale County Museum, which boasts the most extensive collection of Alferd Packer memorabilia known. Included is a skull fragment from one of his victims, a pair of shackles used on Alferd when he was in the Lake City jail, and a number of buttons from the clothes of the five men he eventually ate. Sadly, the butcher knife found sticking in the thigh of Frank Miller (a Packer entree), has disappeared." (Thanks to The Quiet One for the suggestion.) |
